Gifted Education Program

Gifted Education Program

The purpose of gifted education is to provide programs and services that meet the unique cognitive, social, and emotional needs of gifted students, preparing them to succeed in a global society.

Florida legislation has identified gifted learners as a part of the exceptional student education population since 1968. In Florida, students are eligible for exceptional education programs if they meet the criteria outlined in Florida Board of Education Rule 6A-6.03019, FAC. These criteria focus on a learner's need for the gifted education program, general intellectual functioning, and various behavioral and intellectual characteristics. Gifted students come from all backgrounds with special abilities ranging across a wide spectrum of achievement. These students require special provisions to meet their educational needs and are a part of the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) department.  All OCPS students are screened in spring of second grade and others by referral to the staffing specialist.

Orlando Gifted Academy (OGA) is a self contained gifted school in Florida although there are a few that are a "school within a school" model.  We base our program on the work of Renzulli at the University of Connecticut, one of the major university gifted programs in the country. The Renzulli Gifted Checklist is used across the country, including OCPS, in determining eligibility for gifted education.  Our program includes SEM-R reading instruction and Enrichment Clusters along with a compacted curriculum in all content areas to provide a program above and beyond what most schools offer in OCPS and the state of Florida.  In addition, all teachers are certified and experienced in teaching gifted learners.  Here your child can experience gifted instruction all day...more than one day a week or one hour per day unlike most other schools in the country.
