Magnet Program

Magnet Program Information

Orlando Gifted Academy is the district-wide zoneless gifted magnet school in OCPS. We provide opportunities for identified gifted students, entering 2nd through 8th grades next school year. Students will explore a challenging, project-based, and extended curriculum. OGA promotes student academic growth and provides access to a full-time gifted educational opportunity.

All students must apply for and receive a magnet transfer to attend. The magnet application process is managed by the OCPS Office of School  Choice Services. Click here to visit the OCPS School Choice Services Website.

  • Schools are asked to refer students for district-wide screening for the gifted program. Most students are referred by a teacher, but parents and others may also refer.

Referred students are screened at the school by completing a standardized paper and pencil group intelligence test. Those students who score at a high level on the group test are scheduled for a more lengthy and in-depth evaluation by a school psychologist.

A school psychologist administers an individualized test of intelligence to determine a student’s intellectual ability. In Florida, a student must score two standard deviations above the mean or higher in order to meet the intellectual criterion for the gifted program.

In conjunction with the psychologist’s testing, a checklist of gifted student behavioral characteristics is completed by one or more teachers familiar with the student. All information is then reviewed by an eligibility staffing committee at the school to determine if the student has a need for the gifted program and meets eligibility criteria.

Parents may also choose to contract with a private psychologist for their child's evaluation. The private psychologist must be licensed. When a private psychologist is used, the child’s school psychologist will review copies of the evaluation. The staffing committee will then determine eligibility according to the same criteria mentioned above.

Orlando Gifted Academy (OGA) is a safe and enthusiastic community of learners where every student reaches their intellectual, social, and creative potential. With the support and guidance of parents, staff, and community members, OGA students will build a foundation to successfully participate as members of society in the 21st century.

In order to maintain the educational environment that will be the foundation for success, the students and parents who choose Orlando Gifted Academy Magnet Program will be required to adhere to the following:

    • Students must maintain a 2.5 or higher quarterly GPA and have no failing grades.
    • Students must demonstrate appropriate behavior and follow the OCPS Student Code of Conduct with exemplary behavior. Receiving a Level 3 or 4 referral will result in probation and/or dismissal. Two Level 3 referrals may result in dismissal. One Level 4 referral may result in dismissal.
    • Students must maintain an ability to accommodate magnet course requirements in their schedule.
    • Students who do not meet OCPS attendance policies may be dismissed.
    • All 6th through 8th grade students are required to enroll in at least one gifted studies course (e.g. Advanced Academics, Service Learning, or Research).

Upon acceptance to Orlando Gifted Academy, students and parents are required to sign an agreement of understanding (Magnet Contract) indicating certain academic, attendance, and behavioral requirements of the magnet program. Students who fail to meet the standards set forth by the magnet program will be placed on an appropriate probation for one grading period. The probationary form will be completed and signed by all applicable parties. If the violation is corrected during the specified time period, the probation will no longer apply. If there is insufficient improvement at the conclusion of the probation period, the student will be exited from the OGA magnet program and will be required to return to his/her zoned school at the end of the first semester, or the end of the school year, whichever occurs first. Under extenuating circumstances, immediate dismissal is at the discretion of the administration.

A student on probation will not be permitted to participate in any extra-curricular activities or functions (i.e., dances, school-sponsored after-school events, clubs, etc.)
